I drank mango/habanero kambucha and Black tea Kambucha and controlled myself as much as possible. Great fun. Got home and watched an episode of “The Crown” on Netflix.

Chef D are I are both eager for Spring and those gardens the warm mid-west weather brings us. I have some new goals for my garden this year – beekeeping. Yes, I’m in the process of learning about keeping bees and harvesting honey. New challenges keep you motivated and keep you moving forward. Chef D has maintained his positive attitude and has been progressing. He’s lost weight and most importantly, he is doing some form of physical activity everyday. From walking the lake with his Mom to riding the stationary bike, he is working on improving his cardiovascular functioning. We all need to do this. Chef D is also getting in his strength and flexibility training and as with all my clients, he’s working on his neuromotor function, in lay terms, balance.

Did a “Frappe” which is what I call a blender drink that doesn’t have added dairy and protein. They are light and fresh and really cleansing. I put together gifts of homemade goodies that we made from the garden this summer and fall. Opal basil salt, Purple basil vinaigrette with raspberries, Pork and Poultry Rub, Tarragon and Thai basil vinegars, Hot Chili Pepper sauce and other goodies. Had a quick snack of a couple of cold chicken thighs that I had roasted with smoked Spanish paprika. I got to play Santa and deliver them to all our Columbus buddies. It was great to see everyone. I hadn’t been home since before the holidays. Felt wonderful to get hugs and kisses from all my friends. While I was out I stopped by a few of the local ethnic food markets to see what was new. One of the Mexican markets had a new ingredient I didn’t know. Guaje is a pod that looks a lot like a mimosa pod, but a little bigger. I Googled it and found out that you can open the fresh pods and remove the seeds and use them pretty much like pumpkin seeds. There is even a special Mole sauce that calls for them. They can also be purchased dried and then used ground. They also had one of my favorite chilies. Manzana ; it looks like a golden/orange apple and is sweet and spice. I rarely see them fresh in America, but this store carries them from time to time. Met up with my friend who owns the local health food store and we are going to work on a special menu for her shop that will be not only tasty and exciting, but vegan and gluten-free.Rushed home and grabbed some leftover Nicoise salad for lunch. It seems like I always cook too much food. I guess that is what happens when you are used to making large batches in a restaurant. But the leftovers are great, especially when you don’t use a lot of animal fats in your cooking. Animal fats usually harden when chilled, if you cook mostly with evoo, leftovers are great, even when cold! Chillaxed in the afternoon and watched the rest of OA on Netflix and had some air-popped pop corn with garlic scape salt. The series was pretty good, a little sappy, but I liked the way they used storytelling as the way to move the plot along.Dinner were some nice thick Saddle Lamb Chops with Steamed Green Cauliflower that I tossed in the drippings of the lamb with some garlic and rosemary. Simple and great. Mom asked for a little cheese….so you don’t say no to mother. 4 different Capriole Goat cheeses with sliced apple and a couple of Madjoule Dates. As I do most days, I finished off with a little porn…..Garden porn that is!!!! I love looking at all the seed catalogs that come in this time of year! Weird dreams tonight…dreams of past jobs, restaurants, food and drinks.Leave your comment here
January 7, 2017 – Dr. K’s post
Chef D refers to resetting buttons in his last post. Rebooting his effort and his focus on his journey to a healthy and balanced life. Not an easy task, for anyone, least of all a busy chef that has a very crazy schedule and always food around. Last year started off well, Chef had a very stable and balanced schedule, then late Spring hit, along with the events, seasonal garden work and that stable schedule wasn’t so stable. Thus Chef D’s workouts started dwindling and soon enough his schedule was wrecked. Bronchitis in the Fall and here we are, back at it. Fortunately, we’ve learned some things about Chef D, what he likes, what he doesn’t like. All of which is useful in designing a better program for him. Further, Chef has worked his schedule at Farm-bloomington ( http://www.farm-bloomington.com/ ) to be a bit more conducive for a balanced life.

Jan-12-2017MyTendWell Daily Journal 2017Introduction to daily journal:Well another year has gone by and I haven’t completed “Sautéing Off The Pounds.” I’m waking up on January 1st 2017 at the same place I was 365 day ago, except two pounds heavier. December was tough. Had bronchitis and laid around the house for almost three weeks just trying to feel better…which means stuffing my face and not doing any movement except flipping channels. New Years is a classic time to reboot, but it is also famous for false starts and broken promises. Well, I’m going to make it happen this year and track it daily until I show I can walk the walk and talk the talk. I’m going to take many more steps forward and fewer back!!!! So here we go! It might be a bumpy ride, but it is my ride and this is the year I’m not going to fall off the bike…..January 1st through 5th Spent time with my best friend Chris and reconnected with him and myself. Stopped my most negative behaviors and focused inward. No booze after the 31st. This made the time with Chris better and allowed me to enjoy the short time with him to the fullest. Ate our favorite foods and watched great movies. Read a lot of books, most of which were focused on making the most of ones self. It was great to read how others have dealt with challenges and it taught me I am not alone. January 5th drove to Mom’s to settle into work mode and finish this thing.Back home again… do, do, do lookin out my (Mom’s) backdoor and holiday memories.Date: 1/6/17Spiritual –long hot bath with bubbles and candles….Occupational – met with Kelly and we started to set out plans for 2017. It is going to be a great year.Physical- Took an afternoon walk around the lakeIntellectual- Read a chapter each in my two books. Drinking- a love affair and Razor Blade. Took photos on my walk and edited them.Emotional- Shared my eating and drinking issues with mom and we chatted about these and other issuesEnvironmental- Brought in wood and started a fire. I’m realizing that some of my behaviors were developed when I was very young and they worked then, but not now. I’ve gotta man up for myself and become who I always wanted to be, not remain stuck in the mud of the past; spinning my wheels and throwing dirt in every direction but acting like I’m the only one not getting dirty….Using the 8 paths to total wellness I am going to hold a mirror up to my life and look deeply into what I do and ask myself why I repeat behaviors that keep me from joy and why I resist the work that will bring me the real reward of inner peace.Today started with a long Jacuzzi bath with lots of bubbles, oils and aroma therapy. I love having the time to luxuriate at “Spa Harrison,” the home that I was raised in and that remains one of my “happy places.” Had a blender drink of frozen peaches, ginger, turmeric, Meyer lemon, olive oil, water and ice cubes. Delish. It was great to catch up with Dr. K. We are going to have a great time putting the finishing touches on our book. I’m ready for the “before pictures” but she’s gonna kick my ass and make sure that I’m proud of the “after” pics too! We got ML (my 83 year old firecracker of a mother) wrapped up and took her on a walk around the lake. It was breezy as hell and the wind on the dam cut like a knife. Was glad to get that done. I made a nice lunch for us. Kind of a Nicoise Salad but with smoked salmon, broccoli sprouts, cucumbers, wine-cured anchovies, avocado, cherry tomatoes, blackberries and Dijon dressing. In the afternoon I gathered fallen branches from around the yard and broke them for kindling and laid a fire. Had a spicy lentil spread with celery hearts for an afternoon snack. For dinner it was a slow-braised 3 pea stew with chicken thighs and kale. Sat reading by the fire with mom and had a couple of squares of dark chocolate (80% bitter.) Read a couple of chapters in the two books I have going. Finished the evening in bed reading about medicinal herbs and flowers.Working on mytendwell intellectual wellness: New Reads for the New Year…and healthful foods too! Join me on mytendwell journey.
